Now that I’m nearly done with my work on the book–which comes out in September, 2009–I’m getting ready to return my full attention to the blog.
NoImpactMan.com has always been about what each of us can do to participate in solutions to our planetary and social crisis. Sometimes its about how we can make, for example, household cleaners that don’t poison our watersheds. Sometimes its about how we can participate more fully in our democratic process.
Overall, it’s been about how we can change our lives to take full responsibility for our citizenship at the individual, community, regional, national and planetary levels. Of equal importance, it has also been about how we can use our own example to encourage others to get involved on the massive level required to get the coming job done.
We have an incredible opportunity in this crisis. If we take this opportunity, we will change the way we live as individuals and as a culture to both live better, more fulfilling lives and treat far more kindly the habitat we depend upon for our health, happiness and security.
How shall we live?
That’s what I’m interested in addressing on this blog. How we should live, but also, how can we develop structures that allow everyone to participate in our response to our planetary and societal crisis? It’s a joy-based idea–that we, the people, can take charge–but how can we do it?
What do you think this blog should be about? How do you think it should function?
I’d really like to hear your thoughts.
For my part, I think I’d like the blog to expand so that there are between eight and ten posts a day. I’d like the blog to be practical, in the sense that I would like it not just to be a discussion place but also an action place. I’d like NoImpactMan.com to be a launching point for individual action that includes both lifestyle change and participation in our democracy.
How should that participation be structured? I’d like us, as a community, to be part of figuring that out. But to do that, I feel we need to grow. We need to reach out to new readers and move beyond what we’ve made already.
So I’m looking for fellow writers.
You’ll probably be a NoImpactMan reader and definitely agree with the general approach and sentiments of the community here.
You will be interested in individual and societal approaches to improving our lives and our habitat through novel ideas in the management of trash and materials, food production, transportation and land use, consumption, spiritual and humanist approaches to environmentalism, water use, energy production and efficiency, and offline and virtual activism.
You will be enthusiastic about working with me and the other writers to determine the future direction of the blog and in figuring out how to use it to encourage widespread participation in determining and implementing solutions.
You may also help round out my many weaknesses. Perhaps you’ll come from somewhere I don’t or hold membership in communities or backgrounds different from mine. You will bring a new perspective.
Finally, you’ll be willing to write between three and five blog posts a week.
If you think you fit the bill, please send me a note saying what your areas of expertise are, what you’d like to write about, and what your background is. Please also send me three sample blog posts that we can work on together.
Ultimately, we’ll put posts up and let readers decide.
I’m also looking for funding for the blog.
There will be no advertising here, but I’d like the blog to be able to support itself. Until now, the blog has suffered from a deficit of the attention it deserves. I’d like to spend much more time on it and develop more advanced campaigns. I’d also like to pay other writers.
To this end, I expect to by applying to foundations and partnering with non-profits. But I’d like very much to hear what your thoughts are on the funding question, too.
That’s it! I’m so excited to expand what we’ve done here to include greater participation. I’m looking forward to hearing all your thoughts. I hope we can all be leaders in the solutions to our problems.
Thank you.
