So funny, but if you read yesterday’s post in which I went on and on about doing instead of talking when it comes to saving our planet, you may have noticed the irony of the fact that the post itself was talking instead of doing.
Then a lot of people came and read and thought and talked about the post, but none of us did anything!
Is that funny or what?
But why can’t the blogosphere be more than the gabosphere? Why can’t we make it more?
So how about this:
Remember where we did the thing where I asked everyone to call their congress person and report back on how it felt?
What if this time, we all take one positive action to help preserve the habitat we depend upon for our health, happiness and security and report back?
It can’t be a negative action like using less. It has to be a positive action, like picking up someone else’s trash, as one uninspired example.
In other words, it’s not about doing less harm but doing more good.
How about if we all try just one small thing and report back in comments how it made us feel. (But please, in the comments. Don’t email me personally about this.)
Better/worse? More useful/less useful. More hopeful/less hopeful? Inspired? Bigger? Smaller?
Whatever our actions or ideas for actions, let’s think about this question: Were the actions trivial or not and why And if they are trivial what can we do that’s not trivial?
Even if you can’t do the action today, leave ideas in the comments. Not only about personal good we could do but company and business good, too. Indeed, if you’re business owner or worker, so much the better.
Also, is it harder to take do-more-good rather than do-less-harm steps as an individual? Would it somehow be easier as part of community or organization?
Further, can we leverage the work of a person like Professor Jeremijenko from NYU, whose kit to remove CO2 from buildings we talked about the other day, to put technology or technique in our hands to make our individual actions more powerful?
There’s a lot to talk about here, right? Let’s have a blast.
I’ll report back, too.
I’m really curious to see what positive steps you all come up with, but in case you need some ideas:
- Pick up litter
- Convince someone else to help
- Call the authorities about a local fire hydrant or other water pipe that is leaking
- Give a donation to the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights
- Save a baby pigeon
- Lovingly convince someone else to become a vegetarian
- Call your Congress person about HR 5575
- Design a fridge that needs no electricity
- Arrange a 1sky visit to your congress person
- Plant a tree
- Clean out a city tree pit so the existing tree doesn’t die
- Take plastic bottles you find on the street to recycling
- Ask your building manager to turn down the air conditioner
- Design a building that doesn’t need air conditioning
- Get your brand manager to take packaging out of his/her product
- Come up with much better ideas than these and post them in comments.
