…because if people like me, who have the money to consume, don’t find something to do that is more meaningful and fulfilling then just, well, consuming, then the planet may well be screwed.
At the same time, I see how I can deceive myself into spinning round the gerbil wheel and working my butt off to get more stuff, only to find that the stuff doesn’t make me happier.
So I have this idea that if those of us who are among the planet’s comparatively rich–i.e. most but not all Americans and West Europeans–take a breath, ask some of those wacky spiritual questions, and try to figure out what would really make us happy, maybe we wouldn’t have to keep digging the guts out of the earth and belching poison into the sky.
