What is the purpose of life? That may change from moment to moment. But helping others to be able to live out their purpose, too, is probably a big part of it.
What if, in conflict, we thought as no person is our enemy? What if it is misunderstanding, extreme desire and anger that cause poor behavior? Then, are not misunderstanding, extreme desire and anger are our only enemies? So if we want to stop conflict, shouldnt we reduce misunderstanding, extreme desire and anger?
This is the principle I believe should underlie all enterprise, from personal to commercial to educational to religious to governmental: Becoming and helping others to become.
We get scared that being ourselves–following our Truth–won’t get us where we want to be. But if being ourselves gets us there, then maybe that is where we *truly* want to be. So what path should you follow? What life obligations should you choose?
Have you ever felt that you being truly you makes, or would make you, an outsider? What is different about you that should be celebrated? How can you bring it out in your community and use it to help others?
The mythology in our culture is that success and happiness are determined by three things: your job, your romantic partnership, and your stuff (including your house). There is only one problem with that. It’s not true. But there is one thing that, the science shows, predicts success in everything that matters–having a robust, interconnected personal community.
